Why people choose rammed earth building

People choose rammed earth for its many distinctive features. For its strength and durability, for its unique style and versatility, for its thermal mass and noise insulation, for its hazard resistance and natural living benefits, there are many reasons why rammed earth building has become increasingly popular. An exceptional characteristic of rammed earth construction is that it is a finished product. Once built, no rendering, plastering, painting and ongoing maintenance is needed. Also of major convenience is that this quick method of construction utilises the materials available in the local environment which reduces costs associated with cartage and time delays.

Basic outline of the process of rammed earth wall building

The rammed earth blend is made on site using 10 % cement, a waterproofing agent and the natural materials required for the desired effect, as requested by the client. The special recipe has water added to it gradually, while being thoroughly mixed by a bobcat operator, until it is at its optimal content. The earth is placed into the formwork and rammed intensely with pneumatic rammers in 150mm courses until each formwork is filled appropriately. Another lift of formwork is set up above and the same process is repeated until the wall is completed. All conduits from the electrical plan are placed in the walls with the plumbing, hold down bolts and any other necessary requirements. Depending on the purpose, walls can be of any width. Generally for external walls on buildings, 300mm thickness is used with 200mm being the minimum width chosen for internal walls.
